The purpose of this guide is to provide McNeese faculty, staff, and students a basic understanding of copyright restrictions. The authors of this guide are not lawyers, and this guide does not constitute legal advice.
Many schools, colleges, and universities receive copyright violations every year. The University of Massachusetts receives an average of 1,000 such notices per year. Most laws require educational institutions to make a good faith effort in enforcing copyright laws among their faculty, staff, and students.
Copyright is a complicated issue with many grey areas still untested in court. However, there are enough high profile instances to demonstrate that McNeese State University and YOU can be held liable for violating copyright restrictions and face substantial penalties.
