The cost of textbooks has risen 812% since 1978 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

There are different ways to look at the data.  The above chart is recreated by different organizations for a stunning visual effect. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics produced statistics and no graphs.  The 812% increase is actually one of the more conservative estimate available.
